I looked up the closest herd to where I live and that herd is called the Cedar Mountains, I wanted to just copy a bit of information about that herd on to my blog. Its kinda neat to read about a herd that lives so close to you. Here is the info I found:

The vegetation on the upper elevations of the Cedar Mountains is comprised of junipers. The foothill and valley regions include mixed desert shrubs. Due to range fires during the past 10 years, the area is dominated by cheatgrass.

Wild horses have occupied the Cedar Mountains since the late 1800s. It is suggested that the original stock was controlled by the Standard Horse and Mule Company that provided remounts for the U.S. Army. However, many of the horses on the Cedar Mountains are descendants of horses that escaped from local ranches.

The dominant colors within the herd area are bay and black. Other colors found include sorrel, red and blue roan, buckskin, black, palomino, and gray pinto.

The wild horses on the Cedars are classified as average in size. Mares weight 750 to 800 pounds and stallions weigh 850 to 1000 pounds.

The BLM management goal for this herd is to maintain a herd size between 180 and 375 head.

Its been so much fun to watch my family's mustangs that they are working with in the TIP program flourish! I have watched them from day one when they were unloaded out of the horse trailer and not touchable to now they can be rode. Its amazing and the mustang is such a intelligent horse.

I live in Utah and the wild horse population is 2,724 and the wild burro population is 164. So that totals to 2,888! I was shocked to find out there are so many wild horses and burros in Utah.

Just a quick fact the burro to mustang ratio is 9 to 1! I wrote my last paper on burros and they are actually really cool, the more I learned about them the more interested I am in looking into adopting one. We do alot of hiking and backpacking so they would be great for packing.

I just stumbled across a web site that allows your to sponsor a mustang or burro, I thought it was pretty cool for all those people who want to help out but are unable to own one for them self's. There are so many neat programs that are used to help the American mustang and burro's out!

I watched the movie Hildalgo the other day and even though it is kinda cheesy I still really like it because they are showing that no matter the breeding and lines of the horse a mustang can do it all and come out on top. And honestly it show how great mustangs are and can be.

I was reading about draft horses and mustangs and here are a few facts that I found interesting; Some times Draft horses were abandoned due to economic failure or because they were replaced with a tractor, Other times they were deliberately introduced to "dilute" or "improve" the wild herds, by adding size and cooling the natural temperament of the "hot" Spanish horses. I found this interesting because its fun to see all the different sizes and shapes of all the different mustangs at the BLM sales.

My Dad, Mom, and little sisters are doing the TIP program and it is so cool to watch how fast these mustangs learn and progress. They have come a long way from not even being able to touch them to now be able to ride them. I think that programs like the TIP program are great because it really gets people involved into the BLM and knowing all about mustangs.

Well I'm now back from the camp. We had tons of fun. The kids were great and I think they really enjoyed it. We got to see the extreme mustang makeover and see how far the horses had come in just 120 days. I hope all the campers learned a lot and I am very happy that we got to have this experience.

Here is my first post about my new job. I am now currently employed with The Mustang Heritage Foundation. I will be going to Fort Worth Texas on the 12th to be a camp councilor. I will write more when I get back.
